How to build a CAA school list you can actually use

Check the linked school and CASAA instructions for your application cycle. Requirements can change.

A useful CAA school list explains why each program belongs on it and what applying would require. It should help you choose actions, not simply collect names.

Start with a broad discovery list, then narrow it using verified requirements and practical constraints. Keep a record of why a school was added, paused or removed so you do not repeat the same research later.

Confirm what each row represents

An institution can have several campuses without operating several independent application processes. Case Western describes a single program with four locations and a campus-preference process. Your comparison should preserve those campus choices while representing the application relationship accurately. Case Western application process.

Give separate columns to the institution, campus and application group. Keep clinical rotation locations elsewhere. Studying in one city does not establish that every clinical placement or future job will be there.

Apply hard constraints before preferences

Write down constraints that would prevent you from attending: an incompatible entry date, a relocation limit, an unresolved degree requirement or an unaffordable funding gap. Then list preferences such as proximity to family, teaching style or campus setting.

This prevents attractive but impractical options from crowding out the research you need. It also helps distinguish “I do not qualify under the published rule” from “I would rather attend somewhere else.”

A fictional comparison might look like this:

Factor Program A Program B Program C
Course review One syllabus question No known question Two missing courses
Timing Feasible this cycle Feasible if score arrives Better for later cycle
Relocation Within preferred area Would require move Within preferred area
Cost basis Current full estimate Tuition only Prior-year estimate
Next action Ask about lab Complete living budget Plan course sequence

These are planning categories, not rankings or admissions predictions.

Evaluate academic fit carefully

Check actual course rules before concluding that two programs require the same preparation. Compare credits, labs, minimum grades, completion timing and course-age rules. Preserve the distinction between an accepted alternative and a substitution that requires review.

For each unresolved question, identify whether the answer could change your decision. Resolving a lab question may be more valuable than spending another hour comparing campus amenities.

Compare costs on the same basis

A per-credit figure, an annual figure and a full-program figure cannot be compared directly. Record the unit and academic year first. Then build a clearly labeled estimate using confirmed credit or term counts.

Include moving costs, travel and any period of overlapping housing. If the school publishes only tuition, say so. A blank cost field is a research task, not evidence that the expense is zero.

Keep a reason for every application

Write a short paragraph for each remaining school: why the program fits, what preparation remains and what you need to understand before committing. This becomes useful material for later supplemental writing and interview questions.

Avoid assuming a school is a “safety” because your GPA exceeds a published number. Requirements can identify gaps; they do not reveal every factor in an admissions decision.

Maintain the list through the cycle

Review your shortlist when a course result, test score, policy or personal constraint changes. Archive removed schools with the reason instead of deleting your research.

Your final list should produce a realistic workload and budget. If adding another program creates several new courses and a rushed essay, make that tradeoff visible before submitting.

Next, use the cost comparison guide and the prerequisite tracker to investigate your strongest options.

Put this into your plan.

Keep your next steps with the schools and applications they belong to.
